Cardio Workouts Are Not the Best Way to Lose Body Fat

Below is an interview about cardio workouts done by Craig Ballantyne. This presents a great example of how cardio workouts are typically misused by exercise enthusiasts in their attempts to lose body fat. You'll never get those six pack abs if all you keep doing are the same boring cardio routines over and over. Expand your thinking, and shrink your waistline!

Everybody assumes that you must do endless hours of cardio workouts to get ripped six pack abs. But this is simply not true. In fact, if you quit wasting so much time with boring slow cardio routines and change your workouts much more strategically, you will get those six pack abs much faster than you thought was possible!

Let's look into how one female cardio workout fanatic finally lost her excess belly fat and revealed her six pack abs with the help of the innovative Turbulence-Training workouts!

Craig: C-J, let's start with a bit of background on yourself and what your goals were when you discovered interval-training and strength training.

C-J:

Ok, I'm a female in my middle 30's and your typical office professional who spends many long hours in front of the computer.

With regards to fitness and nutrition, I grew up realizing the importance of being active and staying healthy. So while I've stayed active for most of my life, I recently realized that I still had a lot to learn about both training and nutrition.

When I first discovered the Turbulence-Training Workouts, I was looking for an improvement in body composition. I had been introduced to weight training a year or so earlier and had made some really good progress, but had gone past that "new stimulus" effect, and really needed something different to kick my results up again and break the plateau.

Craig: How were you doing before?

C-J:

Well, during grad school and working full-time I let my fitness slip for the days and evenings tied to a computer, and the joys of eating at restaurants once or twice a day. I had gained about twenty pounds and was at my heaviest weight ever at about 160 pounds. Once I finished night school, I added exercise and nutrition back to my priority list and lost those twenty pounds, mostly from running five days a week.

The 2nd stage started when I discovered weight training. I was at about 142 pounds at the time and about 28% body fat. After about six months I lost another 8-10 pounds and 7% body fat.

So when I started the Turbulence-Training program, I had already made decent progress as I was down to about 133 pounds and 21-22% bodyfat.

Craig: What were your workouts like before Turbulence Training? Why did they not work as well? How have you since improved upon those workouts?

C-J:

Before Turbulence Training, I was a "same-pace" cardio fanatic, and I ran 3-5 miles three times a week and strength trained using a four day body part split routine. This plan worked ok for about six months or so, but then I just stalled out and the plateau set in. I'm not exactly sure what the culprit was, but I just knew that I needed a different type of workout program to try.

So when I first started strength training and interval workouts I was skeptical that such a short workout only three times per week would be good enough. I soon realized that strength training and intervals kept the intensity levels higher during EVERY workout, so the 3 days and 2 super sets were actually much more efficient than my four day body part split and three days of running. I also got on an interval training program and reduced my slower "same pace" cardio runs to about one day a week.

Craig: How have the interval workouts and strength training helped you improve your shape? What benefits and results have you achieved? What are your improvements compared to your before stats?

C-J:

I am definitely stronger, leaner, and faster than before.

Strength wise, I can finally do chin-ups and pull-ups, something I've always wanted to be able to achieve. I have also improved my 5k time by two minutes. I also finally have the muscle tone and athletic body shape that I have always wanted.

When compared to my before stats, I have had to throw the scales out the window and use the mirror and compliments I've received as my guide since I have gained a few pounds of lean (but sexy) muscle so the scale weight hasn't changed much even though my body composition has improved. Also, my clothes have gotten looser and smaller and I'm also making fairly significant strength and speed gains. I can also actually see a visible six pack of abs now, which has always eluded me!

Craig: How do you feel in terms of energy and strength?

C-J:

My strength gains are most exciting to me, since I typically have high energy/endurance. I particularly like how my strength gains have transferred to improved running and biking.

The amount I can lift in the gym just sort of evolves, but when I can climb hills on my bike that I used to be forced to walk, and finish 5k runs in times that were once way out of my reach, it feels pretty damn good!

Craig: What features do you like about TT-style strength and intervals?

C-J:

It is fun, time efficient, and intense. Plus it works like crazy! When I am in the gym, I know that I am making the most efficient use of my time.

Craig: Did you change your eating plan with the guidelines?

C-J:

Not a whole lot, but some. I was on a pretty good eating plan when I started TT strength and intervals, but I am constantly learning about making better food choices and looking to change things slightly here and there. Incorporating a post-workout recovery shake and getting as much variety as possible have been the biggest changes in my nutrition habits since I started the program.

Craig: What would you say to others that ask you about your workouts? Do you get a lot of comments from people?

C-J:

When people ask me about my workouts, I try to hold back some excitement so I don't come off as a wild fanatic and overwhelm them.

I have had quite a few comments from others in my gym, either noticing how hard and smart that I am working out, or complimenting me on my progress. One woman even pointed me out and said "I want thighs like that!" to her friend. How cool is that!

It is always enjoyable to see friends or family or even co-workers that I haven't seen in a while because they always remind me of the great progress I have made. It's also exciting that I can show off my flat stomach now too with the sexy little six pack!

The best compliment I get now is in the form of imitation. Others want to know exactly what I do and ask me for tips to help them. They see that it works, want to know how I have done it, so they can try to apply it to themselves.

Craig: Thanks C-J! Keep up the great work with your time-saving Turbulence Training fat-loss workouts.

What Do I Need To Do To Lose Weight?

Weight loss is simple, we humans make it difficult. The body has to consume so many calories per day to survive. Weight loss is nothing more than math (calories out - calories in = weight loss). The key to losing weight is eating reasonable portions and exercising on a regular basis. Weight loss can be hard, but worth it for your health, after all, its the most valuable thing you have. You will find as you begin to lose weight, your confidence will increase as well as your drive to become thin.

Cant I lose weight without exercising? Yes, you can lose weight without exercising, but your weight loss is likely to be greater if you do exercise. It's been hard for me to admit, but weight loss is a slow and frustrating process, it can't be done fast. Quick, large weight loss is dangerous unless monitored by a doctor. Your ability to lose and maintain a safe weight is all about what you do over the long haul.

If you eat a good balanced diet full of vitamins, minerals and essential acids, you will lose weight and become healthier. There are many resources available that offer information on diet basics along with exercise, nutrition and recipe tips. My advice is to stay away from the fad diets; no cabbage diets, banana diets, grapefruit, etc. With these diets you will see initial weight loss but they are nothing you can sustain for a long period of time. Weight loss is about eating healthy and for the rest of your life.

So many people are on the weight loss/fitness merry-go-round it is frightening. Regarding diet pills; I am not going to say it is easy to increase health and fitness without dangerous diet pills or drugs, but it is much safer. You may want to seek personal training and fitness consulting which provide workout and diet plans and are custom designed for each individual. Just get started then prepare to see your fitness level going up as your waist, hips and thighs go down. Always research the latest information on weight loss, diet, health, fitness, and more to help you loose weight successfully. Again, there are many resources available to research weight loss products, diet plans, fitness equipment, diet pills, and articles relating to losing weight.

If you are serious about health, training and diet, chances are you will be successful in your quest for weight loss and a healthy life style. It is important you consult a physician in all matters related to physical health. Who is more qualified than a health professional to help someone lose weight?

To summarize, weight loss is a matter of changing one's lifestyle and that doesn't happen very quickly so you have to be patient. The key to weight loss is eating reasonable portions and exercising on a regular basis. Effective and safe weight loss is within your reach. Done correctly, weight loss is steady and sustainable. It is about changing your life. Losing weight is usually one of the reasons most of us exercise so if you currently do not, you soon will when you begin to drop a few pounds. As you become successful, any experience you have with dieting and weight loss is an experience you can pass on to others. Just remember, weight loss is not miraculous.

How to Lose Weight Naturally - 5 Tips

I hear you ask - "How to lose weight naturally?"

For one, a combination of good nutrition and high intensity exercise is the best way to lose weight.

However, in order to get on track, your nutrition is a priority.

So the plan of attack is - eat 6 healthy mini meals a day and in controlled portions to control your cravings. Get your healthy carbohydrates, lean meal, protein and fiber from meat, fish, nuts, vegetables and fruits. These are the best sources of nutrition to fuel your body into action.

Below are 5 more tips on how to lose weight naturally -

1. Reduce Your body fat by avoiding white flour - which has been stripped of minerals and vitamins, and will not nourish the body . Instead go for brown rice flour or organic wheat free flour - which is far better

2. If you have to eat out, tell your friends you're on a diet and let people know what you can eat. Opt for mineral water, grilled fish or chicken when you are dining out - and skip dessert.

3. How to lose weight naturally with snacks - bad snacks can wreck a diet. Here are a few healthy snack ideas - fruits like black grapes, berries, apples and oranges; celery sticks and raw carrot sticks, handful of Brazil nuts/sunflower seeds/almonds/cashew nuts; unsalted dry roasted peanuts; oatcakes with nut butter or sugar free jam; bowl of hot vegetable soup with oatcakes. And on a periodical basis give yourself a treat, and eat your favorite snack to break the boredom.

4. Best grocery list - Plan a weeks shopping list before your next grocery shop and look to include the following these healthy foods - wholegrain bread, blueberries, eggs, wholemeal pasta, almonds, sweet potato, low fat milk, bananas, yogurt, lean red meat, salmon, olive oil, tofu, and spinach. And never go shopping hungry - or you'll be buying foods with regrets.

5. Stop fixating on food labels and go back to nature - eat 5 to 6 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, then focus the rest of your intake on lean proteins, such as fish and poultry, and unprocessed foods, such as wholegrain carbohydrates. This is a healthy eating plan.

Once you get your nutrition right - start working out using interval training and resistance training to tone your body!

This is how to lose weight naturally.

Detoxify and Weight Loss

With so many foods available it may seem hard to remember which ones are actually healthy for you or not. Some natural sources may even harbor high amounts of toxic compounds because of radical farming methods like fertilization and pest control. Knowing the right things to eat will help you keep harmful wastes at manageable levels as well as minimize fat stores.

Dieting for Health

You should mainly aim to go on a detoxifying diet in order to prevent different types of illnesses and health problems. The diet is not truly intended to help individuals lose weight or look good but as you go well into the process, you will also realize that you're shedding pounds of unwanted fat. Keep in mind that this benefit comes as an added bonus to ridding your body of toxic materials and keeping your vital organs healthy and optimally functioning.

Your body produces and receives harmful chemicals everyday and there are a few compensatory mechanisms done naturally in order to balance the total amount such as sweat, urine and bowel movement. Over time and especially for those consuming or being exposed to dangerously high amounts of toxins, side effects may begin to occur requiring measures like the detox diet. The diet will help rid the system of the accumulated amounts and restore physical, mental and emotional wellness.

Diet Details

One of the main approaches of the detoxifying diet is to eliminate all types of food and allow the individual only to take water and natural food sources like fruits and vegetables for about 5 to 6 days. During the initial elimination, harmful toxins will be removed day after day without any more coming in. The liver, kidneys and other vital organs will have a chance to rest and recover from processing all different toxins for several years. Some people prefer doing a detox diet outside the city setting to minimize exposure to harmful gases and emissions allowing even the lungs to rest. This will make sure that the accumulated wastes have been removed successfully and flushed out of the system. After the restriction, foods will slowly be re-introduced.

Experts categorize several foods as stimulants such as coffee, red meats, salt, spices, refined sugar, etc. These stimulants are said to only produce a temporary effect on the body without truly giving it what it needs. Only natural food sources can effectively be metabolized and absorbed by the body which in turn will lead to physical, mental and emotional wellness. The only way to avoid the pitfalls of unhealthy dieting is by choosing the right products that results in a well-functioning body able to produce enough energy at the cellular level.

Remember that there are proven and safe detoxification diets able to produce overall toxin reduction and weight loss. Steer clear of fad diets telling you to starve yourself since these do not have beneficial effects for the long term. The right detox diet is scientifically sound and you should not have any problem sticking to it. There are different variations so pick the right one that suits your health needs and eating patterns.

The main idea is to choose foods that cleanse and regenerate the body cells. You may also want to add vitamin and mineral supplements. Expect to lose a few pounds during the first 2 weeks. Further weight loss may slow down after body fat levels reach new lows but making the change a lifetime process will help you reach your fitness goals in due time.

Diet Food Home Delivery Program Advantages

If you want to lose weight, there are lots of methods to achieve the best result. Diet by pills, doctor meal plan, and diet food home delivery are one of the well known methods and some of them offer the proven result. In this article, I will write about the advantages of Diet Food Home Delivery. Diet Food Home Delivery is the diet method which you only need to eat the food which is delivered by the doctor or nutritionist. They design the meal plan, count the calories, and cook your food. After they cook the food, they will freeze your food and then deliver it to you.

I love making lists, instead of writing narrative articles. I just write the list article. Here we are, the advantages of Diet Food Home Delivery:

- Save lots of time. You do not need to go shopping and prepare the food. They prepare it all

- Easy. You just need to reheat the frozen food (but they cooked them fresh) and eat it.

- No Calorie Counting. They will count it, and prepare the best food plan for you everyday

- No lack of nutrients. The meal plan was usually designed by a weight loss doctor or nutritionist, and they will add only the healthy ingredients

- Healthy diet. You will lose your weight steadily because you still eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day

- Long term Result. You will not suffer from Yo-Yo Syndrome because this diet is really effective for long term result.

- Proven result. There are lots of success stories for this diet method

That is the advantages of diet food home delivery. However, the diet home delivery has one big disadvantage: price. It takes $24 a day for the doctor meal plan. It was healthy and easy diet, but you have to prepare some budget to lose the weight.

Gastric Bypass Surgery - Get Your Vitamins!

Gastric bypass patients face a great task in the following months and years after surgery, most of which includes monumental lifestyle changes in comparison to their old habits and methods. The most important of all, given that gastric bypass patients have a new, tiny stomach to fill is diet. Similar to how those on a diet of any kind, the body will be taking in less food then usual and so its crucial to ensure that the food and nutrients youre feeding your body are packed with goodness.

This can be a difficult task for the gastric bypass patient, but help is always at hand from the dedicated nutritionists and physicians after surgery. The Internet is also jam-packed with information for healthy diets specifically for patients.

Most of all, as the general gastric bypass diet lacks minerals and vitamins, patients must take extra vitamins to supplement their diet and ensure their body gets all thats required. Among the vitamins recommended are multi-vitamins (chewy if possible!), then calcium, iron and patients may be advised you also take vitamin B-12.

Its important gastric bypass patients dont slip up on taking their vitamins certain conditions can develop soon after surgery if the body isnt getting the required vitamins and minerals. Patients should always keep in touch with their doctor and follow the guidelines set out post-surgery.

Weight Loss Diet Plans

There are untold numbers of men and women who constantly strive to achieve their weight loss goals. They are both successful and unsuccessful in their attempts. Successful in the sense that they manage to lose some weight, and sometimes, manage to achieve their target weight. The problem lies with the fact that most people gain most, if not all, of that weight back in the following months.

Let me tell you a simple truth. It does not have to be that way. On the contrary, it is possible to lose weight effortlessly and to keep it off forever. So, you may ask, what is the secret?

There is no secret. The truth is that dieting simply does not work. Not in the long term. Your goal is to achieve your target weight easily and safely. Just as important you want to keep from gaining the weight back without any effort on your part.

Let us face the facts. Fad diets that advertise fast weight loss results are flawed in their approach. It is unrealistic to expect that these diets will have any long term success.

There are three primary factors that determine a successful weight loss program. If you can understand this and incorporate this into your daily life their is no doubt that you will achieve the results that you desire.

Weight loss and maintaining that loss do not have to be a life long struggle. Consider the following three factors and how you can incorporate them into your life.

1/ You have to set your goals. This is absolutely the most important step. Your desire to succeed must be paramount. Also, this is everyone's biggest mistake. Believe it or not, setting your target weight is not your primary goal. The single, biggest, most important goal that you can establish is to transform your lifestyle.

I do not mean to be cruel here, but gaining weight and becoming fat does not happen in a vacuum. There are serious consequences to consuming foods on a daily basis that are outside the spectrum of good, healthy nutrition.

Do you eat to live or do you live to eat? If your answer is the latter you will encounter some serious difficulties when attempting to lose weight and keep it off.

The single most important factor in your weight loss program involves a radical lifestyle shift. This should be your primary goal.

To clarify what this means: You should eat mostly all natural foods. This includes grains, vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts and fruit. These are the foods that we are designed to eat naturally.

2/ Now that you have established your goal, do it. Clean out and restock your shelves. Stop eating at fast food places. Stop eating processed and enriched foods.

I know, I know, I know. This just is not practical. Stop reading now, right here, and go find a website or an article that reinforces either what you believe or what you want to do.

Unfortunately, the truth is the truth. Life is similar to a board game. This game has rules. We have as much freedom to do whatever we please as long as we comprehend and play by the rules.

We are designed to consume whole, natural foods. Once you are able to wrap your mind around this, the easier this will be.

What is interesting here is that once you alter your lifestyle, the weight will come off effortlessly. Some interesting by products of this effort include improved health, increased energy and clarity of mind.

3/ Just as we are designed to eat natural foods, we also are made to be active. It is extremely difficult to lose weight and to be healthy when sitting around on our butts all day.

If you are one of those that lead a sedentary lifestyle it will be necessary to incorporate some sort of exercise regimen into your daily routine. Exercising on a regular basis gets the improves our circulation, breaks up stagnation, increases our energy and peace of mind and helps us to lose weight.

That's it. Think about what I have said. Cruise the internet and see what others are saying. But I will tell you this. I believe that the truth of what I have said is self evident. If you get it, take action.

An Outline of Jessica Biel's Workout

Jessica Biel probably has the best body in Hollywood. Seriously, she is a great role model for women who want to get in shape. Jason Walsh, her personal trainer recently revealed to People Magazine the workout that gives her slim thighs, firm butt, and generally a rocking body!

Were you lucky enough to see Jessica Biel in the movie Blade 3? If you did, you may have seen fitness perfection. Seriously...Jessica looked amazing in that movie. As a side note, Ryan Reynolds got in amazing shape as well. The great thing about Jessica Biel is that she manages to stay in amazing shape without losing her femininity.

So here is a summary of Jessica Biel's Workout (along with my comments)

1) Cardio...for cardio she does interval training. After jogging for 1/2 a mile to warm up, she does a total of 6 sprints with short rests in between. She sprints for two sets of 200 meter sprints, two sets of 150 meter sprints, and two sets of 100 meter sprints.

My Comments: This is the best form of cardio to really burn stubborn body fat quickly. High Intensity Interval Training has been shown to burn significantly more body fat than steady state aerobics.

2) Plyometrics..."These hurt," says Walsh of stair jumping. "Even athletes hate them. After Jessica did these the first time, she would've punched me if she had the energy." How-to: Jump from the bottom step of a flight of at least 20 stairs to the third. Keep going, skipping a stair each jump.

My Comments: Her trainer, Jason Walsh, understands that plyometrics tone the body in ways that can't be duplicated in the gym. It makes sense that he would recommend these, because Jessica will get better muscle tone as a result. This is one of the reasons why I believe that athletes have better looking bodies than people who only workout in the gym.

3) Weight Training..."We tend to use lighter weights and do more reps," he says. "We keep moving, so it becomes a cardio workout too."

My Comments: This is what Craig Ballantyne, who wrote an excellent book called Turbulence Training, recommends. You can basically burn fat like crazy if you do your weight training in a very specific manner.

4) For the Abs..."Hanging leg raises don't build a six-pack, but they flatten," says Walsh. "Jessica hates them, but she powers through!" They also do the Russian Twist. Sit down and lean back slightly. Hold a 5-lb. medicine ball and twist from side to side, 15 twists per side, three reps.

My Comments: I don't agree with this approach to developing the abs. The problem with hanging leg raises is that they shorten the hip flexors which can dramatically increase your chances for injuries. I am a big believer in a great exercise called "planks". Not only are they effective...they help protect your back from injury as well.

Summary...Jessica Biel's Workout is very similar to a high level athlete. It makes sense that she would have a better looking body than most other actresses in Hollywood...she is training at a higher level. Her approach is intense interval workouts, which have proven time and time again to burn more body fat than "slow and steady" types of workouts. No wonder why she looks so good!

Weight Loss And Diets - Is It More Difficult To Lose Weight During The Holidays?

Is it really more difficult to lose weight during the holidays? This depends on many things, including how much weight you need to lose and what your eating habits are. Here are some things to look at to see what might be affecting your ability to stay on a weight loss diet.

  • Take a look at your social habits. If your lifestyle includes eating out many times each week or attending other types of social or community events, eating a healthy, low calorie diet may be extremely difficult for you. If this is the case, think about how you can best handle it to match your goals for losing weight. Perhaps eating something healthy before you leave your house, such as an apple or some whole grain crackers, will keep you from eating so much when you are out at a restaurant or other social venue.
  • Keep a journal of what you eat over a three day period. See if you eat more at a specific time of day or during certain times of the year. Holiday times, whether they be during Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year's or during the summer - Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, may be times when you are more likely to overeat. Be sure to record your consumption of alcohol, as that can figure into the weight loss equation.

The most important thing is to be aware of what you eat and when you tend to eat more. You may want to find out more about weight loss programs that help you to lose weight quickly.

And now I invite you to learn more about losing weight quickly and keeping it off if you need to lose more than 30 pounds by visiting http://www.FivePoundsAtATime.com to find out about the master cleanse weight loss diet.

Easy Weight Loss - Take Control Of Your Bad Habits

We have all heard people say thing like, "Hey, I'm on a diet," or "I'm going on a diet." Of course, doctors don't talk this because they know that really everyone is on a diet. A diet is simply what you eat.

There are two aspects of traditional weight loss diets that are worth commenting on.

First, when you are going on a diet plan, you actually think about what you are going to eat and take control of that particular activity. You know to plan ahead so you don't have to simply eat what's there or not eat at all. Planning when and how we eat is something we should all do all of the time, even when we are not trying to lose weight.

Secondly, most people think of dieting as a temporary break from their normal eating habits when, in reality, this second assumption is what leads to so much of what is wrong in the entire diet culture. If you accept your diet as temporary, then you will likely go back to your old habits right after you have seen the slightest results.

Here's the best tip I can give you: You have to change the way you eat everyday, and it's not easy. But it is possible to create a diet that still allows you to enjoy what you eat and eat the foods you love. You just need to put together a creative diet that works for you everyday, and learn to stick to it!

Do you want to get rid of those extra pounds you packed on? Although they sure did not pile on overnight, you'd like to get rid of them overnight, wouldn't you? Have you had enough? Are you ready to do something about it? Change your thinking and you can change your body. Your Weight Loss success story can start today! Click Here to get started! Bike Riding for Weight Loss - Tips for Beginning A Bicycling Plan

If you are one of those people who leisurely pedal around the block or over a flat stretch of scenic road, youve probably been riding for sheer pleasure. Riding bikes for pleasure is a good form of aerobic exercise. But unless you map out a plan to push yourself, you probably wont lose much weight.

I really get sick of hearing people say, No pain, no gain! But the old adage is true when it comes to riding bikes to lose weight. By pushing your cycling distance or speed, you are sure to feel some pain in your leg muscles, your hands, wrists, and your derriere-- even some pain in your throat and lungs as your body tries to accommodate your increased demand for oxygen.

HEALTH TIP: Stretching exercises prior to exercising are helpful in preventing injury!

GETTING YOUR BICYCLE READY...TO ROLL OFF THE WEIGHT

Your first concern will be outfitting your bicycle. If you need an excuse to purchase a new bike, this is an excellent opportunity! I went from a 3-speed bicycle for leisure riding, to a 24-speed bicycle for more committed exercising. Once I learned how the different gears worked, I was very thankful for the extra speeds. They make my ride faster and the hills a lot easier to handle.

Weve found the guys at the bicycle shop to be very helpful, and concerned for our unique cycling needs. Rather than simply steering us toward the most expensive bicycle available (as I had expected), they asked how much riding we would be doing, whether we were trying for speed or leisure, and whether we would be riding on paved roads or dirt trails. When you honestly share your goals and level of experience, the sales clerks can match you with exactly what you need. They want you to be successful in your biking venture!

Some state laws require bicycle lights. But if you will be riding anytime from dusk to dawn, common sense demands that you have lights on your bicycle. These little accessories are battery-operated and last a long time. There are a variety of lights to choose from. My tail light has different blinking speeds, and is designed to make my bike visible to cars approaching from both the rear and the sides. Check for brightness before you buy one. Install the light where it makes the most sense.

We held off on buying a speedometer and odometer unit for our bikes, but once we got serious about losing weight and getting in shape, this feature became a must have. You simply cannot track your progress without knowing how far and how fast youre riding.

If you already have a bicycle, take it to the bike shop for a safety inspection each season. They should check the gears, tires and brakes to make sure everything is working properly. They can adjust your seat to fit your height and adjust the handlebars to fit your reach, making your ride more comfortable. If youre lucky, they might even clean and polish your bike!

If you want to save money in the long run, you can find books and videos that teach you how to care for your own bicycle. Its always a great idea to know how to change your own flat tire and adjust a loose chain.

Another must have is a bicycle pump. Ask your bike dealer how many pounds of air pressure to put in your bicycle tires. Check the tires each time you get ready to ride! We guessed at the air pressure one summer day, and lived to regret it. We rode the bikes to the swimming pool, not realizing that one tire was too full. While we were cooling off in the water, the hot sun was rapidly expanding the air in the tiresone tire blew as it sat in the parking lot. The day in the sun was not so fun, once the pool closed and we had to wait for a truck to haul us home!

HEALTH TIP: Talk with your doctor first, and get his or her blessing before you increase your rate of physical activity!

STAYING COMFORTABLE ON YOUR BIKE

Sitting for long periods of time on a bicycle seat can cause pain, discomfort, and even serious blood circulation problems in avid bicyclists. At your local bike shop, youll find a variety of bicycle seats made specifically for your comfort and health. The salespeople at our local bike shop encouraged us to try out new seats on our bikes for a few days. My husband found the split seat to be more comfortable for himself, while I opted to keep my old gel seat. Someone has even invented seats that look more like a bird perch than a bicycle seat!

HEALTH TIP: Get off your bicycle seat and walk around every 25 minutes or so to get the blood flow to important unmentionable parts of your body.

Think about your clothing...you dont have to have padded biker shorts and special clothing to start riding bikes. There are actually scientifically engineered fabrics designed to pull sweat away from your body in the summer and to keep you from getting hypothermia in the winter. But for now, just wear layers of comfortable sports clothes.

Make sure your clothes arent so tight that you are miserable trying to pedal. But they shouldnt be loose enough to become entangled in the bicycle chain, either! If you become overheated, strip off a layer. If you get cold, add a layer. Wear light or bright colors to allow drivers to see you easily.

It really helps to have a small cargo rack on the back of your bike. Mine looks like a little shelf over the back tire. It has two bungee cords to keep any cargo securely fastened to the bike. Ive used it to tote a small picnic cooler, a shopping bag or extra clothes.

I had the bike shop attach a water bottle holder to the bike under my seat. I can grab a quick swig as I ride or pour some water over my pulse points to cool off a bit. Take small sips of water when needed during your bike ride, rather than chugging huge gulps.

A helmet is almost a must. Life is filled with hazardsand biking has its share. Be smart. Wear a helmet. You can buy a cool rear-view mirror for your helmet. The mirror helps you see when its safe to turn and lets you observe traffic coming up from behind.

I recommend wearing sunglassesboth for the sun and for bugs! At certain times of the year, the air is thick with flying insects. Getting a tiny bug in your eye is a painful event. For contact wearers, carry a contact case and lens cleaner on bike rides for just that reason. Some day youll be glad you did!

HEALTH TIP: Shake your hands downward frequently to get the blood flowing and to prevent pain or numbness in your arms and hands.

MAPPING OUT A WEIGHT LOSS PLAN

You will want to keep a record of your daily diet and food intake, your weekly body measurements and weight, as well as your bicycling miles and time.

The web site www.OpenFitness.net is an excellent way to track your progress. It is very easy to usesimply type in your information you wish to track. As the only community fitness web site of its kind, youll find it to be a fantastic motivation tool that will print out charts and graphs to show how much progress youve made in a few days, a week, or a month!

It keeps track of your food, vitamin, and supplement intake. Thousands of foods have already been analyzed by experts for number of calories, fat, carbs, and protein. You simply select the foods you ate from a pull down feature, and the daily total is tallied for you. Make sure you dont exercise when youve just eaten, or when its almost meal time. Both times will slow you down.

No matter how humiliating it is, measure your arms, legs, chest, waist, neck, hips and thighs once a week. The software keeps track of your weight and body measurements. The thrill of seeing those same inches melt away in the coming weeks will be worth the effort. Its especially impressive seen as a graph!

Consider investing in an instrument that actually measures body fatthere are inexpensive pincer-type instruments that measure fat by pinching you, or buy a set of bathroom scales that cost more but calculate body fat quite painlessly.

Try to ride 4-6 days per week. When you map out your weight loss plan, your short-term goals will change as you change. Youll quickly develop stamina for longer distance. As fat turns to muscle, your speed will increase. Each week, try to increase either your mileage or your speed.

You know how far youve been able to ride, thus far. Start keeping track of the exact route you are taking, the total mileage, and the length of time it took you. Make notes in your records for special circumstances. Did it get dark outside so you were forced to cut your ride short? Did the road crews dump a layer of gravel on your normally paved road?

What was the weather like? Was it dangerously hot? Was it windy? The wind can be your friend or your enemy. When the wind is behind you, your ride is a breeze...but coming from any other direction, be prepared to huff and puff. Accept any length of time as a job well done and simply get the ride accomplished!

Finally, add an upper body workout three times per week. Bicycling works your legs, but to get the rest of your body firm and trim, youll need to exercise your upper body, as well. The www.openfitness.net web site, created by a certified personal fitness trainer, has excellent features which allow you to design and track this portion of your fitness program, as well.

Bicycle riding is a fun, inexpensive form of aerobic exerciseits good for every part of you. But be warnedyou will need to buy a whole new wardrobe for the thinner, more beautifully fit body that emerges!

Get rid of fat on the inside even if you are a slim person

They've even given a name to people in this significant sector of the population - TOFI or "Thin on the Outside Fat on the Inside". Are you a TOFI?

Weight Loss Surgery Basics

The physical and mental discomfort associated with being morbidly obese can be overwhelming. There are so many health risks related to obesity, including diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, sleep apnea, and acid reflux. These conditions can greatly shorten a persons life span and quality of life. And often, an obese person has tried every diet and exercise regime out there in order to lose weight, to no avail. For those that are more than 100 pounds over their ideal weight, it might seem like weight loss surgery is the only solution.

Weight loss surgery is often meant for those individuals who are 100 pounds or more over their ideal weight, or that have a body mass index (BMI) over 40. Potential patients often have to show proof (both to the doctor and the insurance company) that they have attempted to lose weight through various means of diet and exercise unsuccessfully.

Weight loss surgery is not intended to be used as form of cosmetic surgery. It is major surgery, with several potential complications, and the decision to do it should not be entered into lightly.

Before making the decision to have any type of weight loss surgery, know all of the facts and options. Ask the bariatric surgeon and any other doctors many questions, and make sure that the answers are completely understood. Know all of the potential risks, and understand the commitment that will be required after the surgery. Weight loss surgery is not a fix-all, and a great deal of effort must be made to maintain weight loss, change bad eating behaviors, and make sure that dietary and nutritional needs are being met.

There are several immediate and long-term risks associated with any type of weight loss surgery. These include:

  • Bleeding
  • Reaction to anesthesia or subsequent medications
  • Dehiscence (the rupture of a surgical wound)
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots)
  • Infections
  • Ulcers
  • Stenosis (abnormal narrowing of blood vessels)
  • Pulmonary problems
  • Injury to or removal of the spleen (due to bleeding)

While the occurrence of many of these problems are rare, it is important to know that they are possible with anyone having surgery, and to know what effects they can have.

There are 2 types of weight loss surgeries, restrictive and malabsorptive.

  • Restrictive procedures force the patient to decrease food consumption. These procedures do not disrupt the regular digestive process.
  • Malabsorptive procedures cause food to be inadequately digested so that it is eliminated in the stool. These procedures do interrupt the regular digestive process, and can lead to conditions such as anemia and malnutrition if great care is not taken to ensure nutritional maintenance post-surgery.

While weight loss surgery can help those who are morbidly obese and have struggled to lose weight for a long time lost the excess weight, it should not be seen as a magic pill. The surgeries will help patients lose a lot of weight, but it is still up to the patient to change eating behavior, exercise regularly, and be committed to a new lifestyle for the rest of his or her life.

Abdominal Slings

Slings are types of looped structures meant to provide support to some object. Like we have slings to support a broken arm, or an injured neck etc. They are made of cloth especially linen and provide great comfort as support material.

The latest in exercise workout is using Abdominal Slings. As from its meaning we can infer that it will provide support. Actually using abs slings you can hang on to a solid staff and then do several abs workouts.

Slings are used to exercise and develop the strength in the lats, triceps, and abdominal muscles of the human body. Parts of a sling It contains a connective band that separates a pair of loops, a pair of U-shaped forearm belts, and a pair of assemblies, each comprised of an inner shell and an outer skin. Sling is attached to a bar, say a lat bar or a chin up bar by means of hooks provided . Slings are padded and almost 8-9 wide. Thus they provide extra comfort.

How does slings help in exercising?

Abs exercises can be carried out by placing the hands in between the looped structures. After the upper arms are well inside the loops and the body is balanced, then using the force of the sling hung by hooks, lift your legs and bring them perpendicular to your body. The whole body weight is supported by the slings. This exercise, known as leg raises, provides maximum stress to the abs muscles. Earlier one had to hand on to a steel rod with his hands and then perform leg raises and other abs workouts. These were not only very strenuous but were prone to back injury. Slings also provide means to exercise your lattissimus dorsi (lats) and the triceps. In a similar way, slide your upper arms and forearms in the loop. Then flex your arms and hang with the support of slings such that the muscles in the lats and triceps region are stressed.

Benefits: Slings are very safe and comfortable. As they are soft and padded they provide extra cushion to the arms. Therefore earlier when people did not use slings, they ran the risk of injuring the arms and the back. Slings prevent such mishaps.

At the top of the slings a steel hook is provided. These firmly attach to the rod of about one and half inches diameter above. Therefore, you do not need to hang directly from the rod. This keeps your palms safe. These can encourage superior toning of the abs region, making the muscles stronger and well groomed. One of the very few workouts that isolate and work solely on the abs.

Risks: Although the risks are minimal yet worth discussing. Even though there are extra pads provided to make them softer and more comfortable, yet there are chances of losing balance. This can result in long sustainable injury of the backbones. Sometimes even hyperextensions of the muscles in the lats as well as the triceps are possible. These can result in muscle pain in those areas and is quite painful.

Who should not work on slings: As you know with any abs exercises, any patient suffering from stomach pain, abdominal muscle pull or pregnant women should not use slings. As these exercises affect the abs region the most, care should be taken as to be fit and well toned up before working out.

Quick Weight Loss Tips - How to Avoid Overeating at Restaurants and Official Events

Let me ask you this question - have you ever had an official event get in the way of your weight loss effort? For example, you spend two weeks on a diet. You're starting to lose weight at last. You're no longer afraid to face yourself in the mirror. And then you get invited to a company dinner, where you are served with a five-course meal - and a dessert!

You can't refuse to eat, because you'll get funny looks from your coworkers. But if you work your way through the entire dinner, you'll deal a massive blow to your diet. And even if you promise yourself not to eat more than one or two meals, we both know you'll break that promise later. How do you handle this? Well, as a matter of fact, in this article I will show you three tried-and-true ways of keeping your diet no matter what your waiter serves!

1. Eat Your Meals Slowly

Company events are an occasion for networking rather than dining. Therefore, spend more time talking than eating. Research shows that it takes your stomach 20 minutes to tell you that it's full. As such, the more time you spend talking, the sooner you will feel satiated - and you will eat MUCH less! Better yet, your coworkers won't ask you any annoying questions. No one wants for being too obsessed with weight loss to eat.

2. Eat Well Beforehand

The best way to make sure you don't go on a binge at a dinner is to eat beforehand. If your stomach is full, you will feel less incline to eat at the event. However, make sure that you eat something healthy - salad leaves are great for making your stomach feel full with practically no calories involved. Also, avoid exercising before such an event, since working out tends to make you hungry immediately afterwards and can lead to a dinner binge.

3. Keep Drinking

Let's get something straight - I'm not talking about alcoholic drinks here. But water is great for filling your stomach for a short period of time. You will feel less hungry and, as a result, less tempted to eat all you can during the dinner. Another good way to prevent a binge is to allow yourself a few sandwiches during the dinner. Have a few whole-grain buns. They're reasonably healthy in moderate amounts and don't have that many calories.

As you can see, corporate dinners or parties do not have to be a diet killer! By following those three simple steps, you will make sure that you can still spend a productive (and, hopefully, fun!) evening with your coworkers without totally ruining your diet.

Low Carb Diet Tips: How to Fight Intestinal Problems Easily - Part I

Diseases such as constipation and diarrhea are not uncommon. They happen to everybody, especially when you go for a major change of diet, such as switching from a high carb to a low carb diet. Diarrhea happens mostly to low carbers because when you are on a low carb diet, your body produces fewer carbohydrates and more ketones. Low carbers also suffer from constipation. However, it should be noted that constipation doesn't stem directly from a low carb diet regimen. In fact, constipation is caused when your body receives less than the required amount of carbohydrates. Foods such as legumes, pulses and whole grains contain a lot of fiber but unfortunately, these foods are strictly prohibited during the early periods of the low carb program. In this article I will tell you how to fight back constipation and diarrhea and regain your normal health.

How to Fight Constipation:

Let me tell you one thing upfront: if your previous diet was full of sugar and starchy foods, it would take sometime before you can adjust yourself to a low carb diet. However, constipation is not directly associated with low carb diet. In fact, it is a different kind of a problem, and can be caused by a combination of problems. Most commonly, constipation is caused because of fiber deficiency. To give your body the required amount of fiber, you need to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Also drink lots of water every day. And never ever buy over-the-counter pills, especially pain-killers, codeine and other opiates, as well as antidepressants, iron pills and diuretics. These drugs have certain ingredients in them which cause constipation.

If you want to cure constipation permanently, laxatives won't help either. It is OK to use laxatives for a short time, but for long term I would use a stool softener such as Docusate, which are non-addictive and easily absorbed in the body.

Another way to cure constipation is to eat fiber supplements such as sugar-free Metamucil, or plain psyllium husks, which will force the bowel to move forward. Note however that you should eat this fiber supplement only with water; otherwise it will have negative effects on your body.

Another way to cure constipation is to do exercises regularly. Because when you do exercises, your whole body starts moving, and consequently, your bowel too starts moving! You can also practice yoga as it has been found to be helpful for constipation patients.

In the second part of this article, I will tell you how to cure diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (ibs), as well as how to find good low carb food products. To access the second part, simply click on the link in my resource box below.

Eating low carb foods can benefit your health in more ways than you can imagine! To learn more about low carb diet, read her full article Low Carb Diet Tips: How to Fight Intestinal Problems Easily: Part II by going to:

Simple Weight Loss

Once a week, indulge in a high-calorie-tasting, but low-calorie, treat. This should help keep you from feeling deprived and binging on higher-calorie foods.

Treat high-calorie foods as jewels in the crown. Make a spoonful of ice cream the jewel and a bowl of fruit the crown. Cut down on the chips by pairing each bite with lots of chunky, filling fresh salsa

After breakfast, make water your primary drink. At breakfast, go ahead and drink orange juice. But throughout the rest of the day, focus on water instead of juice or soda.

Carry a palm-size notebook everywhere you go for one week. Write down every single morsel that enters your lips -- even water. Studies have found that people who maintain food diaries wind up eating about 15 percent less food than those who don't.

Eat five or six small meals or snacks a day instead of three large meals. A 1999 South African study found that when men ate parts of their morning meal at intervals over five hours, they consumed almost 30 percent fewer calories at lunch than when they ate a single breakfast. Other studies show that even if you eat the same number of calories distributed this way, your body releases less insulin, which keeps blood sugar steady and helps control hunger.

Downsize your dinner plates. Studies find that the less food put in front of you, the less food you'll eat. Conversely, the more food in front of you, the more you'll eat.

If you follow these simple weight loss tips you should start to lose weight.

Chinese Medicine For Weight Loss

Weight problems are never categorized as a major health concern in Chinese medicine. Chinese people rarely get fat or obese. But nevertheless, obesity is still one problem addressed by traditional Chinese medicine.

The weight gain problem is more apparent with the Western race. And if weight loss were to be tackled in the light of Chinese medicine, you'd see that there are a quite a number of ways to treat it. These medicines are normally over-the-counter medications that consist of natural herbs and decoctions.

To initiate weight loss with the use of Chinese medicine, pattern discrimination is the first step. In here, the person's metabolism is analyzed through the bian zheng lun zhi process. This technique is effective and has a long-term effect. Once the actual reason why a person's metabolism is slow gets determined, then the necessary treatment procedure would be carried out. And these procedures are moxibustion, acupuncture, and diet modifications through the aid of natural herbs.

In traditional Chinese medicine, weight problems are focused on the spleen. This is because of the fact that the spleen directly controls the flesh and the muscles, including the transformation of the body's water fluids. The spleen is also the reason of the engenderment of phlegm. Once the spleen gets damaged because of eating too much fatty and sweet food the person gets fat. At that condition, the spleen won't be able to function and move water fluids all over the body and transform them into nutrients along the way.

Water fluids that aren't processed accordingly collect and gather in the different parts of the body. These are what transform into fatty, bulgy deposits in the waist, arms, legs, and other parts of the body.

In Chinese medicine, the primary treatment for obesity is also exercise. So there's really no going around it. If you want to lose weight, you have to start eating less and exercising more. Western or Chinese medicine, it is all the same. The only difference between the two techniques is the use of Chinese herbs and the most common Chinese method of healing, acupuncture.

The herbs used for losing weight are Shan Za, Zhi Ke, Sheng Jiang, Zi Su Ye, Huoxiang, Chenpi, and Laifuzi, among many others. Most of the time, these herbs are mixed in special proportions and are taken in two to three times in a day. These herbs are normally sold in capsules for easy administration.

Here are some examples:

Diet With Bo Jen Mi Tea

Yes, you can curb your eating pleasures with the use of this tea. Just take Bo Jen Mi tea for a month. You will surely lose substantial weight along the way. This diet tea is composed of half tea and half herbs. Take two to three cups per day, preferably before every meal. That should keep your diet on the sound side.

Herbal Diet with Wu Wei Zi

Wu Wei Zi is the food or herb that is considered as a complete meal as far as Chinese medicine is concerned. It is a prized food product because it contains all the five tastes of the Chinese diet. Basically, if you eat this herb, your body has all the nutrition it needs. And so, you need not eat more. Fructus Schizandrae or Schizandra is the pharmaceutical name of Wu Wei Zi.

Go on a Diet with He Ye and Fu Ling

These herbs are two of the best ones to counter the effects of gaining weight. These herbs, when taken orally, mixed with food, or drank as a tea, can produce impressive effects on an obese person. The other herbs that can be mixed with these two are Huang Qi, Zi Cie, and Da Huang, among others. Chinese medicine also recommends cucumber as the best food item for dieters.

However, there are also diet powders that can help initiate weight loss. These diet powders contain Ji Geng, Qiang Huo, Chai Hu, Shu Di Huang, Sheng Ma. To use it, the powder should be dissolved in a tablespoon of warm water and taken half an hour before mealtime.
