How To Avoid Holiday Weight Gain - What Is The Mental Aspect?

The holidays are a tricky time when it comes to avoiding weight gain. Most people think this is a physical thing, but I believe that it's as much a mental thing. If you take the right approach to your diet on the holidays, you'll avoid gaining weight. Otherwise, you'll stumble and fail.

Why is your holiday weight gain dependent on your mentality? The reason is that over the holidays it's very easy to do things which are detrimental to your diet. The temptations are too great: there are countless dinners and parties, high calorie holiday dishes, less time for physical activity, more time to spend at home which can lead to overeating. All these things are pitfalls on your way to maintaining your weight during the holidays.

The only way you can skirt past these traps is by making a firm decision, a pledge to yourself that this year you'll pass the holidays without gaining a single pound. If your pledge is strong enough, you will find yourself easily avoiding making the same mistakes people who gain weight during the holidays tend to do. Your subconscious will make these decisions for you. You'll eat just enough to enjoy yourself, but you won't overdo things. You'll eat small portions of the fatty and high calorie dishes. You'll do some exercise once in a while even if it's just walking to a friend. And most importantly, you'll limit your alcohol intake so as not to drink your calories.

When you're in the holiday spirit, it's easy to forget these things. That's why people wake up the day after New Year's and they can't fit inside their clothes anymore. A firm decision which you'll repeat to yourself each morning until January 1st will help you to avoid the holiday weight gain.
